The Lower Depths by Maxim Gorky, adapted by Grayson Kennedy Role: Nastya Directed by Danny Kapinos Gwydion Theatre Company, Chopin Theater
February - March, 2026

A critically-praised world-premiere adaptation of Gorky’s Russian classic, where Nastia was lucky enough to play a character that shared her name! The Lower Depths investigates the forgotten class, the poorest of our poor citizens, and their untold human connections in a world where they have been disconnected from humanity. Nastya is a sex worker who daydreams elaborate romantic fantasies to escape the harsh realities of her life. She has frequent arguments with the Baron, and she is consistently humiliated and degraded by her fellow boarders for her hot-headedness. Despite her frequent, passionate declarations to leave the boarding house, her own naiveté and fear keep her trapped in her own “hell.”

Nastia Goddard as Nastya, the sex worker, is especially charismatic. Some of her line deliveries, like when she’s resigned, ‘I’ll drink—then I cry again—that’s all there’s to it!’ or full of rage, ‘My love was real honest-to-God love!’ stay with one more than many of the erudite pieces of dialogue.”
